Teen book review: Where the Red Fern Grows

This review was submitted by one of our talented teen virtual volunteers.

Where the Red Fern Grows is the remarkable tale of a 10 year old boy named Billy Coleman who lives in the Ozark mountains with his family. Billy’s dream is to purchase a redbone coonhound dog, and that’s his ultimate goal. His family isn’t wealthy so he has to save up the money himself. Therefore, he worked hard, puts in the effort and was finally able to save up enough money to purchase two pups. He named one of them Little Ann and the other Old Dan.

Billy absolutely adores his new dogs. His hard work and dedication gave him the ability to buy his dream pet. He ultimately creates a strong bond with his dogs and they become a great trio together. Billy embarks on many adventures with his pups. They allow him to have more happiness in his life. With his dogs he now has a new perspective on life as well as a new sense of  joy that he has never felt before. With these dogs his life definitely turns around and together the trio experiences many new adventures and creates many memories. Through every adventure and obstacle they all stay determined and dedicated as they work together.

This story is about a man and his relationship with his dogs. We have all heard the phrase: “a dog is a man’s best friend.” This story truly represents this phrase. Billy, a boy who never really fit in, was able to find a new sense of happiness and joy in life with his dogs. His pups truly are his best friends and they push him to experience many adventures. This book also represents determination as both Billy and his dogs have great determination and strength to keep going and conquering every adventure and obstacle that comes in their way. Together this trio works hard and looks out for each other. This book is a great example of love, friendship, and hard work it also proves that love, friendship, and hard work can also be in relationships with our pets as well.

I highly recommend this book to everyone despite age. From young readers around age 10 to adult readers of all ages, this book teaches great lessons that are appropriate for every audience to learn and these are lessons that never go out of style. Whether it is your first time reading this book or your hundredth time you will still feel the emotion and connection that every word in this book provides. The love in this book and the lessons are crucial for every age to learn about it and read. I love this book and would definitely recommend reading it!!!! 🙂
