In this blog series, we're introducing members of the Library's Synapse Team.
Hello, my name is Kaitlynn and I am a Library Associate at Kirk-Bear Canyon Library. Synapse is a wonderful team, and I am grateful to be a part of it.
What do you do to turn things around when you’re having a bad day?
I do a couple things, depending on how I am feeling. Sometimes it is nice to curl up with a good book and escape reality for a while, or go for a walk and blast some music, or cuddle with the cats. Also, I am really in a sticker book moment right now as well.
What’s a common piece of advice you don’t agree with and why?
I think when it comes to mental health struggles, we have made a lot of progress, but I still often get the advice: “Don’t be sad.” This isn’t helpful because, whether you are struggling with mental health issues or even just having a bad day, you can’t just turn it around like that. If it was helpful, I would definitely be cured by now!
What’s the best advice you were ever given? Who was it from?
This isn’t really advice, but I often think of this quote by Stephen Chbosky from The Perks of Being a Wallflower: “We accept the love we think we deserve.” I think about this quote a lot and how it has shaped my friendships and relationships, but the importance of it is that, with some time, we can break bad habits and find love that we truly do deserve.

What’s a small act of kindness you were once shown that you’ll never forget?
When people take the time to remember the small details or they take the time to check in on you, those are the small acts of kindness that mean a lot.
Who is your hero? Why?
A little bit of a cliché, but definitely my parents. Both of them work really hard, and I admire how they have navigated through the adversity they have faced in life. My mom is going through a really hard time right now, but her strength and determination have been there every step of the way.
Where would you be right now if you had zero obligations and money didn’t matter?
I really would love to travel to every state and hit the big historical spots and then go on over to Europe and the U.K. and see what thousands of years of history looks like.
