Website and Catalog Tip of the Week #20: Making the Best of the Events Calendar

We all know it: Pima County Public Library’s event calendar, opens a new window is a bit of a monster. With twenty seven locations, there’s a lot going on all the time. If you’re looking for something going on today, you might find it on your first try; but something you heard about that’s happening next month? Good luck.

There are two easy ways to get to the events calendar from the library's home page. The first is through the Events link at the header, with the calendar icon next to it. The other is through the Event Spotlight, which features a few of the events that are happening right now or in the very near future. If you select View All Events at the bottom of that box, you will get to the same events calendar. You can also start out by searching.

Much like the catalog, the events calendar was designed to be searchable. That means you can use the search bar that is available on every page to search only the events.

You can also use the built-in tools to facet and refine your search; therefore it's great to familiarize yourself with the best part of the events calendar: the sidebar.

Even without using the search bar, there are several ways to get closer to what you’re looking for. Looking for something happening tomorrow? Drop in the date, and that’s all you’ll get. Looking for what’s coming up at Martha Cooper Library over the next week? Drop in those dates, and then check Martha Cooper in the list of libraries. Looking for fun crafting activities for you and the kids? You can check both event type and audience further down the sidebar. Just frantic for something to do that is happening soon and isn’t far away? You can also check by zip code (or use your current location).

If you’re using the website on mobile, it’s just as easy to refine your search. In fact, there is a button at the top of the Events page that just says “refine” with an expand indicator. There, you’ll see all the same options for narrowing your search to find what you’re looking for.

And remember: Every library name on the events calendar takes you back to that library’s location page, which will give you hours, a map, and contact information if you want to call the library directly. It’s a great way to verify there is space in an event that doesn’t have an online registration feature (as some of our events do).
