National Dog Day is August 26

Do you love dogs? Do you want to learn more about them? Scientists believe dogs have been human companions for about 15,000 years!

Once dogs became domesticated (trained to live with humans), we began to breed them for different purposes--dogs were bred to help with hunting, herding livestock, protection, and some were bred to simply to look pretty sitting on a rich person’s lap.

Like the dogs of thousands of years ago, dogs still work today as guard dogs and herding dogs. Now they work in other, new ways as guide dogs for the blind and therapy dogs for the sick and elderly. They even work to sniff out drugs, bombs, and diseases!

Dogs are amazing and helpful in all these ways. They are also beloved partners and friends. We humans love our canine companions.
