Meet Michelle of the Synapse Team!

In this blog series, we're introducing members of the Library's Synapse Team. Today, we're excited to introduce you to Michelle, Children's Librarian, Nanini Library.

What do you do to turn things around when you’re having a bad day?

I have to consciously question my thoughts. Ask myself if these thoughts are true or just how I am feeling in the moment. Then I look for things that ARE working and feel a little gratitude.  I also move my body, if only for ten minutes, and get some sunshine.

What’s a common piece of advice you don’t agree with and why?

To achieve balance in our life. I believe that certain aspects e.g. our work, health, family, finances, etc. are prioritized at different times.

What’s the best advice you were ever given? Who was it from?

“Be gentle with yourself” and “Take it day by day. If that’s too much, then hour by hour, or take it minute by minute”.  Basically, navigate your day to what feels manageable while giving yourself grace.

What energizes you at work? What kinds of activities energize you in general?

I love programming for children and their families, knowing I am giving them an opportunity to learn, connect, and have fun. I get energized around my child who is high energy and enthusiastic about most things.

What’s a small act of kindness you were once shown that you’ll never forget?

My coworkers give me hugs and my friends check in on me. It’s the small things in the right moment that mean a lot.

Who is your hero? Why?

Any single parent who shows up day after day is my hero. They juggle wearing many hats, carry a heavy mental load, face loneliness, have limited or no free time for self-care, and yet still show up for their family every day.

Where would you be right now if you had zero obligations and money didn’t matter?

On the beach playing in the water, going on a walk, or reading a book.

What motivates you most to come to work?

Knowing I make a difference in people’s lives. That I am part of a community that cares and empowers people.

What books do you recommend?
