Artist Statement:

Artwork by Patricia MathesPatty Mathes is a landscape and portrait artist with a studio in Tucson, Arizona. She is especially fond of photographing and painting ranch life, roundups, rodeos and sacred Native American ceremonies. She challenges herself to create traditional Western subjects that capture the history of a vanishing rural life as well as Native American culture.

She has won numerous awards, including Signature Member from the Pastel Society of America and the Pastel Society of New Mexico. She was a featured artist in the Pastel Journal and included in the “Pastel 100” show as well as the International Society of Acrylic Painters 7th Annual Open Exhibition. Patty’s art has been included in Southwest Art magazine and the Art of the Portrait published by the Portrait Society of America. She has exhibited in the Empire Ranch Western Art Shows and Sale and the Mountain Oyster Club Contemporary Show and Sale. She was included in several exhibitions at Tohono Chul Park Gallery in Tucson including “Birds in Art” and “Tough Lovelies: Agave and Yuccas in Art” as well as “Holiday for the Park.” She was a featured artist in the “Going West” show at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Tucson. Patty was selected as the 2019 Tucson Fiesta de Los Vaqueros Rodeo poster artist. Her “San Xavier Blessing” painting was auctioned at the 2019 San Xavier Mission Live Art Auction to support the continuing efforts of the restoration of the historic church. Her work has also been included in the Tucson Museum of Art’s CRUSH events. Several of Patty’s paintings were selected for the Tucson Medical Center Healing Arts Program’s permanent collection. Most recently one of her mixed media pieces was accepted in the 2022 Arizona Aqueous XXXVI national juried show at the Tubac Center of the Arts. She is currently showing work in “Cultivating Colors” at the Tucson Botanical Garden and work will be exhibited in “Arizona Colors” at the Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum July-October 2023.
