MegaMania, the Library's version of Comic-Con, took place on July 19, 2025. We had so much fun celebrating fandoms, geekery, and more with the community! We loved seeing people express their passion and creativity through costumes and art. Here are some quick stats about the event:
- At least 800 people attended the event, but the total number of attendees is likely over 1000.
- We gave out at least 1500 books.
- The video game area hosted nearly 300 players.
- There were 3 Escape Rooms (1 Minecraft themed, one Animal Crossing themed, and one Pokémon themed) and over 158 people participated.
- 43 cosplayers took the stage in the cosplay showcase.
Librarian Lindsey Curley (Diné) led a powerful discussion with actor and comic book writer Jon Proudstar (you might recognize him from the show Reservation Dogs). Proudstar is a Pascua Yaqui/Mexican Native Tucsonan. The discussion was phenomenal. We laughed, we cried. We didn’t want it to end. You can watch some of his movies and see a sample of his comic book work in the Indigenous Comics Collection Moonshot by checking them out from the library catalog.
Writer in Residence Logan Phillips. You can watch to an interview with Logan Phillips, author of Sonoran Strange, at this link.
There was also a poetry workshop and an open mic withOther highlights include a painting workshop with Dolores Haro, percussion fun with Robyn Nolan, learning to draw comics with Frank Powers, Dungeons and Dragons games, and more.
Our Affinity Teams also joined the fun! There was watercolor painting with Shaun Beyale (Diné), origami bookmarks with Many Nations, DIY power shields with Welcome to America, and Kawaii-themed origami with Biblio Lotus, and the Pride, Kindred (speaking of, don't miss Kindred's new Books Invited to the Cookout!), and Synapse teams tabled as well with such cool new swag. At the Nuestras Raíces table where I was stationed, we had a Lucha Libre mask-coloring craft as well as a coloring sheet where attendees could design their own Lotería cards. It was great to see kids of all ages excited to be creative. We gave out almost 400 comic books to the community, which is part of the 1500 total books the library gave away at MegaMania.
So many fandoms were represented at MegaMania. Spider Man visited, as did characters from Star Wars, anime shows, the Ghost Busters franchise, Studio Ghibli films, and the Men in Black movies. Disney princesses and women in elaborate historical dresses graced us with their presence, and there was even a tiny toddler Queen of Hearts.
We hope everyone who came to MegaMania had a mega fun time. We want to give a huge thanks to Pima Community College for letting us use their incredible downtown campus, and to everyone who made the event possible! We’re already dreaming up plans for next year.
In the meantime, may the force be with you, and live long and prosper.
