Artist statement:

My name is Eledel Giddings, originally from the Philippines and now residing in Tucson, Arizona. I love to paint people and the landscape – two different subjects that are deeply connected in certain ways. This exhibition is a collection of my plein air work depicting Arizona landscapes. I love the outdoors and nature – painting within the environment provides a certain authenticity and immediacy to the process. It’s capturing that moment in time that makes a painting unique – even when painting the same location each piece is different.

I paint mostly in oil when painting landscapes. I like the versatility of this medium that can be manipulated and applied in certain ways to achieve the effect I want in the painting. I focus on the effects of light as it creates a certain mood to the work. My plein air work reflects the landscape in a somewhat realistic way but with a level of abstraction achieved by large brushwork which adds movement to the painting. In each brushstroke, my intent is to bring out emotions and spark inspiration which allows viewers to form their own connections with the depicted scenes. The show goes beyond a mere display of landscapes, inviting contemplation and encouraging viewers to find personal significance within the paintings.

My creative journey is driven by a curiosity about the intricate web of human connections facilitated by art. Whether through a shared appreciation for familiar landscapes or the discovery of new perspectives, I believe art has the potential to bridge gaps and foster a sense of shared experience. Plein Air Impressions invites you to explore this theme, encouraging you to discover your own emotions, inspirations, and meanings within the painted landscapes presented.
