Synapse Team presents a Community Dialogue on Mental Health

(Tucson, AZ) In light of the degree of anxiety and depression being reported by so many teens and adults at this time, the Library's Synapse Team—in collaboration with the Southern Arizona Psychological Association (SAPA)—is hosting a Community Dialogue on Mental Health to address areas of interest to adolescents and their parents and caregivers.

Two discussion groups will be held simultaneously—one for parents and caregivers and one for teens ages 12 and above. A main purpose of each discussion group is to show participants how to talk about the difficult topics that we know teens encounter on a daily basis.

Focus will be on questions and answers from the participants. These are not therapy groups, but for education purposes only. The groups are designed to give teens and parents and caregivers up-to-date and accurate information about a variety of topics and make it easier for families to have conversations at home.

As part of the event, the Library and SAPA will provide lists of trustworthy resources. Snacks will be provided. While no registration is necessary, attendance will be limited to the room capacities.

Participants are invited to bring their own topic ideas, including but not limited to:

  • Friends having mental health problems
  • Social media and screen time
  • Family and peer problems
  • Self-care for parents and teens
  • Gender and sexual orientation
  • Academic problems
  • Bullying
  • Prejudice and discrimination
  • Drugs, alcohol, and peer pressure
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Self-harm and suicide
  • Eating disorders
