An evening with author and musician Willy Vlautin

(TUCSON, Ariz.) – Willy Vlautin, singer, songwriter, and award-winning author of contemporary westerns, will be reading from his newest book, Don’t Skip Out on Me at the Kirk-Bear Canyon Library on Tuesday, March 20.

Vlautin, whom Library Journal has called the literary heir of the late Kent Haruf, will also perform songs from the soundtrack he created to accompany the book. The soundtrack evokes the novel’s spirit and Southwest setting—Tucson readers will be interested to note that Don’t Skip Out on Me is partially set in the Old Pueblo.

Vlautin was, until recently, singer-songwriter and lead guitarist of the alt country and rock band Richmond Fontaine, and is currently a member of the Delines.

Published by HarperCollins, Don’t Skip Out on Me garnered starred reviews from Publisher’s Weekly, Booklist, and Library Journal, and is an “Indie Next” pick for March. It is Vlautin’s fifth novel.

A master of the art of literary realism, Vlautin’s previous works are The Free (read this great review in the New York Times!), Lean on Pete, Northline, and The Motel Life.  The movie adaptation of Lean on Pete, which debuted at last year’s Venice Film Festival to critical acclaim, will be released nationwide in March.  It stars Steve Buscemi and Chloë Sevigny, and is produced by A24 (the studio behind Moonlight and Lady Bird).

An Evening with Willy Vlautin begins at 6:30 pm, and will be followed by a book sale and signing. The event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served, courtesy of the Friends of the Kirk-Bear Canyon Library. The Kirk-Bear Canyon Library is located at 8959 E. Tanque Verde Rd, at the northeast corner of East Tanque Verde Rd. and N Bear Canyon Rd. For more information call 594-5275.
