Each year, during the winter holiday season, the Winterhaven neighborhood is illuminated by their Festival of Lights. Many residents decorate for the season with themes ranging from traditional Christmas lights, to celebrations of Hanukkah, or displays that reflect personal interests.
The neighborhood tradition began in 1949. when C.B. Richards, founder of the Winterhaven Water and Development Company, was inspired by Christmas decorations in Beverly Hills, California. Richards donate the first set of light to residents, along with pine trees that were planted throughout the neighborhood.
This tradition has been observed every year with the exception of 1970 when a power shortage forced the neighborhood to turn off their lights.
This event is voluntary for residents, and the residents do not receive a discount from Tucson Electric Power. To find the dates for this festival go to Winterhaven Festival.orgopens a new window.
