Our recent donation drive for the Tucson Afghan Community was a huge success, and we have you to thank for it.
The drive, held in January and February, benefited newly-arrived families from Afghanistan. These families are helped to acclimate to their new home in our community by the Tucson Afghan Community (TAC), who partnered with the library on this drive.
Quick stats about this drive:
- People donated items at 15 libraries
- 10 library staff and 7 community volunteers helped out by picking up and delivering donated items to TAC in addition to organizing donations
- The drive was one month long
How successful was it?
- You donated 106 large boxfuls, or approximately 3200 square feet (!!) of items
- The donations filled 3 public storage units
- $1,900 in donations by check filled in the gaps for these newly-arrived families
- 42 Afghan families and individuals received much-needed household and daily-use items, such as bedding, kitchenware, small electrical appliances, cleaning supplies, personal hygiene, clothes, and toys
Many more Afghans who are in temporary housing in our community are glad to know that there is ample supply to start them off once housing becomes available for them and their families in the near future.
Pima County Public Library and Tucson Afghan Community are very grateful to all the donors for their kindness and generosity.
