What is the first song you remember in this life?
I think the first song I remember in this life is “J’s Lullaby.” It is such a beautiful song and my mom used to sing it to me all the time when I was little to help me fall asleep! Music has always been very calming for me.
If you could have dinner with an artist who has passed, who would it be?
I would probably have dinner with George Harrison or Bob Marley! I would like to ask them both about their artistry, performances, their beliefs, and get to learn about them as people, not just performers.
If you could recruit anybody you wanted to be in your band, who would it be?
I would probably recruit Gregory Alan Isakov or Shakey Graves. I feel like it’d be so fun to sing with both of them and they are both so talented. Gregory Alan Isakov would be especially awesome for guitar and harmonies and I’ve always admired Shakey Graves’ voice and percussion skills while playing guitar, too!
What song makes you want to cry?
This is a hard one but I think something about songs that usually makes me emotional is listening to them live. I was an absolute happy crying mess at my second Ziggy Marley concert haha. That room was filled with such love, joy, and community you couldn’t not be moved. I think that concert was one of the happiest moments of my life yet.
On your death bed, what would be the last song you listen to?
On my deathbed I think I’d listen to Bohemian Rhapsody.
What song motivates you?
A song that gets me up and moving would be “The Last of the Honey Bees” by Sam Burchfield. There’s a lyric that says “I don’t want to grow up cause someday I’m gonna be dead and gone.” Every time I hear that, I’m reminded how truly precious our lives are and how little time we have, so we need to make the most of it!
If you could give your genre of music a new name, what would it be?
I don’t think I would give it a new name! I love the sound of the words folk and indie, what they represent, and the history they carry. If I had to, maybe “Forest/Mountain Music” or something like that.
Who's your musical GOAT?
Mine would have to be Tyler Joseph of Twenty One Pilots. Growing up and finding myself as a musician, his message and lyricism were foundational beliefs in my artistry and still are today.
What is your favorite lyric of all time?
My favorite lyric of all time is probably, "Don’t want to know who I would be, When I wake up from a dreamer’s sleep.” (Twenty One Pilots, We Don’t Believe What’s On TV) This lyric reminds me of growing up but it also resonates with a fear that I and probably a lot of musicians have. The fear that if we don’t “make it”, at least by society’s standards, we won’t know who we are anymore. But I’ve realized that monetary success doesn’t measure who we are at our core or reflect the value of our craft. That is measured in our hearts and the hearts that we touch.
Use five words to describe your music.
Introspective, Hopeful, Nature, Loving, Comforting
Do you love or hate Phil Collins’ In The Air Tonight?
I won’t say I hate it but probably not a favorite, don’t cancel me haha!
What song on eternal repeat would you wish for your nemesis?
This is a funny question….let’s say “In The Air Tonight” by Phil Collins.
Do you have a song you love from another generation?
I am absolutely obsessed with the song “Strawberry Fields Forever” by The Beatles. Not only with the way they created it, but it’s just a beautiful song. Also “My Sweet Lord” by George Harrison!!!
What's the best concert you ever attended?
Either Twenty One Pilots or Ziggy Marley!! Both had such community in their crowds and inspired me so deeply.
Who would you collaborate with?
I would dream of collaborating with Gregory Alan Isakov, he’s just amazing!
Who do you regret not seeing in concert?
To be honest I’m pretty impulsive with seeing my favorite artists in concert. If I see they have a show near me, it doesn’t matter what I was doing that day, I will now be going to that concert! But I have not seen my favorite band of all time live yet, The Backseat Lovers, and I would probably actually sell my soul to go to one of their concerts!
