Demystifying Dyslexia

October is National Dyslexia Awareness Month (NDAM)! This annual observance is centered around education and awareness about dyslexia, a language processing disorder that affects reading, spelling, and writing. Raising awareness and starting conversations around neurodevelopmental challenges and literacy helps us as a society fight misconceptions and stigma surrounding the differences in the ways our diverse brains function.

Dyslexia is a lifelong condition, meaning children diagnosed with dyslexia will not outgrow it. However, this does not mean that individuals with dyslexia will continue to have the same level of difficulties throughout their lives! Specialized reading support and accommodations are available and can help children and adults reduce challenges and thrive in school and work.

Our hope as a library system is that advocacy during NDAM can also empower caregivers to educate themselves about literacy resources and approaches for reading success that will positively support young learners’ reading journeys.

Pima County Public Library is proud to provide access to dyslexia-friendly, decodable books for young readers by Simple Words Books in our children’s collection. These titles are designed for striving readers ready for “big kid books”, but who are still working on building up their vocabulary and reading fluency and comprehension skills!
