Deep South story with a twist… or three

The Help by Kathryn Stockett takes place in Mississippi during the 1960's. The story is told from several perspectives, primarily that of two African-American maids, Aibileen and Minny, and a society girl, Skeeter.

The Help

After returning to her hometown of Jackson Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan wants to be a writer, but there does not seem to be many opportunities presenting themselves. So she chooses to interview the maids of Jackson, hoping that they'll tell her what it's like to work for white families. She hopes they will tell her all of it, the good, the bad, and the ugly. At first, no one dares talk to her except for Aibileen, her best friend's maid. Slowly more maids come forward, and the stories they have to tell are incredible.

I was skeptical of this book at first. After my mom set it on my desk I opened it without much excitement. Next I knew I was staying awake at night telling myself that I would only read one more page. Then one more. Then one more. Until I had reached the end. This book was surprisingly funny considering its uneasy subject. It was also very heartfelt, with moments that made you think, laugh, and cry.
