Using the library can be challenging if you don't speak English. With the help of web translation and videos, we're making it easier.
Watch Welcome to the Library Videos
A good place to start is our Welcome to the Library videos. Watch videos about how to use the library in Spanish, Arabic, Somali, Maay Maay, or Nepalese. If you have friends, family, or neighbors who are learning to use the library, sit down and watch the videos together!
Translate the Website
One of the cool, lesser-known features of the website is the ability to translate pages into other languages. The main part of our site can be translated into nine languages: Arabic, Chinese (simplified or traditional), French, Korean, Russian, Somali, Spanish, Swahili and Vietnamese. The catalog and My Account system can be translated into Spanish. Here's how to do it:
To translate the website, select the drop-down at the very bottom of any page below the green Contact Us and blue Website Feedback boxes.
After you select a language, the website will be auto-translated using Google Translate into the target language you select.
You'll be able to make selections like you do in our drop-down menus in the language of your choice. I selected Spanish below.
Page text will also be translated. Here's our New and On Order Titles page in Spanish:
Learn about the Library by reading our FAQs in your target language, too.
Even our catalog search page is translated for you using this option:
To get back to English, you can select the option at the top that says, "Show Original":
There is one part of the website that cannot be translated at this time, and that is our Events calendar. Even if you've selected one of the nine languages, once you click on Events, the page switches back to English. We do offer events in Spanish, which you can find by searching for specific words, such as "Clases de Inglés."
Searching the Catalog and Using My Account in Spanish
The translation method for the catalog and My Account sections of our website is a little different. Full translation is offered only in Spanish, and you must select your language in your account settings for it to take effect.
Go to My Settings from the My Account menu, and then select Display Language.
Select Español, then Save Changes.
If you ever want to switch back to English for My Account and the catalog, go back into My Settings to select English and Save Changes again.
