10 Ways to Celebrate Mes de la Cultura

Mes de la Cultura takes place annually from September 15^th to October 15^th and is dedicated to honoring the contributions and heritage of Latin American diaspora. The date of September 15^th is important because it marks the independence of five Latin American Countries (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua). Mexico and Chile also celebrate their independence days during this month. For these thirty days, we make a special effort to celebrate our community’s rich mixture of cultural, linguistic, and social identities (There is no single "look" unique to Latinx folks). If you are looking for ways to engage with la cultura, September is Library Card Sign-Up month, so apply for a library card, and dive right in!

Here are some ideas to get you started:

1. Check out a book from our catalog. There are many lists of general recommendations for all ages and tastes. Whether you’re looking for a children’s book, YA, literature, Latin American Magic Realism, or history by Latin American (and diaspora) authors, there’s a list for that. Explore AfroLatinidad. Find lists with books from specific countries like ¡Viva México!.  Read the Mexican-American Studies books banned by HB 2281 or dig into the Borderlands or Chicanx experience and browse the Frank de la Cruz Collection. Maybe you just want to learn how to perform a limpia. If you can think of a book or subject, we probably have it on our shelves. If we don’t, you can suggest a purchase and we might be able to get it for you. Also, stay tuned for more book lists from our team this month!
2. Watch a movie on DVD or Kanopy (there are lists for that too). In fact, Kanopy has an entire Hispanic Heritage Month collection to stream!
3. Cook something delicious! Celebrate Mes de la Cultura with these recipes or look for a recipe on Culture Grams.
4. Find your Mexican American Heritage in Southern Arizona/Encuentre su herencia mexicoamericana en el sur de Arizona with these resources.
5. Get a Culture Pass to the University of Arizona Museum of Art and check out The Vault Show: Staff Picks (the exhibition runs until September 30, 2023), and Desert Triangle Print Carpeta (the exhibition runs through December 21, 2023) which features the work of Southwest and Latinx artists.
6. Explore Latin American countries in the Countries & Geography section of the E-Library.
7. Read the biographies of notable Hispanic Americans.
8. Listen to music by Latinx artists on Freegal. Check out The ¡Viva México! Playlist and Viva Latinoamérica playlists curated by yours truly.
9. Learn (or brush up on) Spanish or Portuguese.
10. Watch the Global Arts Showcase: Mes de la Cultura 2021 on AZPM or take a virtual tour on Latino Cultures in the US like this one of Chicano Park.

This list is not exhaustive by any means. There are many ways to celebrate Mes de la Cultura. Whoever you are, no matter where you come from, Mes de la Cultura is for you. Tú eres mi otro yo. Our individual stories are all intertwined. Remember, these resources are available all year round, too, so honoring la cultura doesn’t have to stop on October 15^th.

We hope you come celebrate at El Grito with PCPL on September 15^th , 3 – 5 pm at the El Rio Neighborhood Center to kick off the month and celebrate the anniversary of Mexican independence with music, performances, and community!

El Mes de la Cultura toma lugar cada año desde el 15 de septiembre hasta el 15 de octubre y es dedicado a honrar las contribuciones y herencia de las diásporas de latinoamérica. La fecha del 15 de septiembre es importante porque cinco países latinoamericanos (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, y Nicaragua) celebran su día de la independencia en esta fecha. México y Chile también celebran sus días de la independencia respectivos en este mes. Durante estos treinta días, hacemos un esfuerzo particular por celebrar la diversidad cultural, lingüística, y social de nuestra comunidad (los latinos no tienen solamente un “look” exclusivo a ellos). Si está buscando formas de interactuar con la cultura, septiembre es el mes de inscripción de tarjetas de biblioteca, así que solicite una tarjeta y ¡A darle!

1. Pida un libro de nuestro catálogo. Existen muchas listas de recomendaciones generales para todas las edades y gustos. Ya sea que esté buscando un libro para niños, literatura juvenil, realismo mágico latinoamericano o historia escritos por autores latinoamericanos (y de la diáspora), hay una lista para eso. Explora la AfroLatinidad. Encuentra listas con libros de países específicos como ¡Viva México!. Lea los libros de estudios mexicano-estadounidenses prohibidos por la HB 2281 o profundice en la experiencia Borderlands o Chicanx y explore la colección Frank de la Cruz. Tal vez usted sólo quiera aprender a realizar una limpia. Si se le ocurre algún libro o tema, probablemente lo tengamos en nuestros estantes. 2. Vea una película en DVD o Kanopy (también hay listas para eso). De hecho, ¡Kanopy tiene una colección completa dedicada al Mes de la Herencia Hispana!
3. ¡Cocine algo delicioso! Celebre el Mes de la Cultura con sabor o busque una receta en Culture Grams.
4. Encuentre su herencia mexicoamericana en el sur de Arizona con estos recursos.
5. Obtenga un pase cultural para el Museo de Arte de la Universidad de Arizona y vea The Vault Show: Staff Picks (la exposición estará abierta hasta el 30 de septiembre de 2023) y Desert Triangle Print Carpeta (la exposición estará abierta hasta el 21 de diciembre de 2023), que presenta el trabajo de artistas del suroeste y latinos.
