WHAT is wireless?
Wireless Internet access uses radio frequency signals to exchange information between your computer and the Internet. No cables are required.
WHERE is it available?
PCPL offers WiFi at all of our locations except Salazar-Ajo and Oro Valley.
WHEN is it available?
Wireless access is available during regular operating hours.
WHY use wireless?
Library users can use their wireless laptop computers to:
- Check e-mail
- Surf the Internet
- Do online research
- Check the library catalog
- Access the library's databases anywhere in the wireless zones
Can I print on the library's printer when I am using wireless?
No, printing is not available from the wireless network. Save your documents and print it elsewhere, or save your documents to a disk or cd-rom and use one of the public computers available in the library to print it.
How fast is it?
Our system uses the WiFi standard (IEEE 802.11b and 802.11g). These standards provide up to 54 megabits a second connection speed. Speed will vary by location and number of users, and the capability of your equipment.
HOW do I use wireless at the library?
You will need to bring your own laptop computer to the library. Your Laptop will need to have built-in WiFi or you will need to purchase and install a WiFi network card. The Library does not provide wireless cards and does not install them.
Most WiFi equipment will be compatible with library's WiFi network. The library can make no guarantees that you will be able to connect with the library's network.
Will I need any special settings or passwords to connect?
No, the library's patron wireless network is open to all visitors. No special encryption settings, user names, nor passwords are required. A library card is not required. The Wi-Fi network is unfiltered. You must agree to Computer and WiFi Use Agreement to connect. If you do not agree, you will lose your wireless session.
Since I'm using my own equipment, do the general rules about computer use still apply to me?
Yes, you must accept library's Computer Wi-Fi Use Agreement (PDF) before using the WiFi network. Any activities that violate the agreement apply to you whether or not you are on a library computer or your own.
If you attempt to circumvent library procedures or attempt to access or manipulate equipment that you are not authorized to use, you will be disconnected permanently from the library's WiFi network.
Can the library help me configure my computer?
No, because each computer is different, and library staff is not able to offer technical assistance with your configuration. Check the WiFi Troubleshooting page for help.
PCPL is not responsible for any changes you make to your computer's settings. If you need assistance, you may need to contact the manufacturers of your hardware or software.
What about virus protection and security?
It is solely your responsibility to provide anti-virus protection, and to configure your laptop/PDA with security. The library is not responsible for damages incurred for incorrect, insufficient or incomplete security settings; or lack of virus protection. Wireless users assume all risks when using the WiFi network. Any virus-infected computer connecting to the wireless network will be permanently blocked.
