Computers FAQs

Does the library offer computer classes?

Yes. The library offers computer classes at various locations. Check the Computer Classes page for a complete listing of classes.

What software and access do your computers have?

Computers have Windows XP, Internet access and Microsoft Office 2003. Most computers have a CD-ROM drive (read and write), a DVD drive (for playing DVDs only), and USB drives. Bring headphones to use sound functions.

All computers have:

  • Internet connection (access to most web-based email providers is possible)
  • Microsoft Word 2003 (includes a Résumé Wizard)
  • Microsoft Excel 2003
  • Microsoft Publisher 2003
  • Microsoft Powerpoint 2003
  • Microsoft Access 2003
  • Mavis Beacon Typing Software
  • WinWay Resume
  • Windows Media Player
  • Quicktime
  • Real Player

Exceptions and additions:

  • Sahuarita, Flowing Wells and Wheeler Taft Abbett Sr, Branch Library do not have read/write CD-ROM drives or DVD drives.
  • Southwest Library offers 1 session during TUSD's school year and 2 during their summer break.

Do I need to bring anything?

Bring your library card! You will need your library card to use the computers.

Can I save my work?

Yes. Please bring a flash drive (portable USB drive) to save your work. Very few library locations have IBM-compatible 3.5" disk drives for use.

How do I reserve a computer for a specific date and time?

You must come into the library to make the reservation, up to three days in advance. No phone calls, please.

How much does it cost to print?

Printing costs 10¢ a page, black and white only; our printers take coins or $1 bills.

Is computer assistance available?

While some assistance and training is available, users assume full responsibility for learning to use the equipment and the programs. We encourage you to bring someone with you if you are not familiar with using computers.

Can I use public access computers for email?

You may access your email through a web-based service. Read about free email.

Library staff will not endorse any particular free email service or help you to sign up. PCPL does not have a dedicated email software package and does not maintain personal email boxes. If you are unfamiliar with email we encourage you to bring someone with you to choose a free provider and set up an account.
