Finding the right funder requires research into available funders and which funders fit with your organization. See the Fit Funding Match.

Formal Path

  1. Published sources in print (books) or electronic format (databases - Foundation Directory Online Platinum and AZ Guide to Grants and Giving) at the library
  2. Internet: but only about 12% grantmakers in Foundation Directory Online have Web sites. Gateway Web sites such as Foundation Center.
  3. Read the Guide To Funding Research provided by the Foundation Center.
  4. See the web for all federal and some state government grant information.
  5. Web sites of some businesses outlines their grantmaking program or their community involvement.
  6. Use library resources on this web site.
  7. Grantseeking Basics (free monthly workshop) at the library teaches about these resources.

Informal Path

Locations and groups which may serve as sources of information, brainstorming, and partnership rather than as sources of funding.

  1. Word of mouth.
  2. Annual reports and newsletters of grantseeking nonprofits and groups in your field and in your geographic area.
  3. Formal presentations and informal conversation at professional associations, conferences, workshops, and meetings in your field.
  4. Internet communication in your field: newsgroups, blogs, listservs, forums, and discussion groups; Web sites of organizations in your field.
  5. Networking organizations in your field or in fundraising and grantsmanship. See Professional Associations.
  6. Local organizations and government agencies such as
    • Community Foundatioin for Southern Arizona
    • City and county Community Services departments
    • City, county, and state elected officials and their staff
    • PRO Neighborhoods
    • City of Tucson's Citizen and Neighborhood Services
    • School districts or schools in your neighborhood
    • United Way
  7. Civic and fraternal organizations, clubs and associations in your community.
  8. General interest newspapers and magazines in your community to raise your awareness of local grantmakers and funding sources.
  9. The Pima County Public Library can direct you to resources for finding everything mentioned above.
