Happiness Community Conversations

Beginning the week of October 14, and extending for five weeks, several library branches will be hosting Happiness Community Conversations, open to the public, for youth and adults. These conversations complement the University of Arizona’s College of Social and Behavioral Sciences 2013 Downtown Lecture Series on Happiness.

Participants in the Happiness Community Conversations are encouraged to attend the UA Happiness Lecture Series, held on five Wednesdays from mid-October to mid-November at the Fox Theatre downtown, but it is not a requirement. The library conversations will include ideas from the lectures and take a creative and community leap forward, encouraging "next steps" for Tucson's residents to take as individual and community members in order to create a happier and more prosperous Tucson.

All the sessions are facilitated by professionals who work with Community Renaissance. For more information about Community Renaissance, contact Anita Fonte at 520-331-5582 or visit the website community-renaissance.com.

During the discussion this summary of the World Happiness Report may be referenced.

This week's topic: Compassion Training as a Path to Genuine Happiness

Suggested Community Conversation Questions:

  • Is compassion different from kindness? If so, how and which do you find easier to practice? Why?
  • When you consider practicing compassion, where do you first think of directing that practice (to yourself, to animals, plants, other people)? Why do you start there?
  • What examples from your life can you describe that give evidence to the idea that practicing compassion (and/or kindness) can generate happiness?

Demystifying Health Care Insurance Coverage: What the new Marketplace offers and how to enroll

This presentation will take a look at the different insurance options available to date in Arizona, how to calculate your eligibility for a subsidy, and where and how to apply.

This applies to people who already have individual health insurance, have no insurance, or get health insurance through work. It does not apply to Medicare recipients. The seminar is free to the public.

The speaker is Alison Hughes, retired faculty from the University of Arizona's College of Public Health, and immediate past chair, and current member of the Pima County/Tucson Women's Commission. The Tucson Urban League, and the Pima County Action Program (PCAP) and Navigator grant partners will be on hand to show people how begin the enrolment process.
